The one approach that was developed in house and works well is what we call as the "Cave Navigation Method". The premise here is that creating software is like navigating a cave. One can only see up to the next bend. Once we reach the bend the next steps appear.
Given that creating software is an expensive thing to do and correcting course in flight is even more expensive, the Cave Navigation approach gives us the best of both worlds.
We have a homegrown method of bringing everyone be it the development team or the stakeholders of the project on the same page with this approach.
